You may think that the Mercury Cougar auto that the origins of the Mercury Cougar auto were nothing more than a whale sized version of simple Ford Thunderbird car. However, it surprised many that the history and development of this classic American sports car rather was that of the NASCAR legendary Mercury "Pony Car", just started, but "butt" in the Trans-Am Automobile racing circuit.

Originally Lincoln-Mercury (considered at the time of be the luxury end of Ford Motor Corporation), has conceived the idea of development, design and marketing of small-sized sports car. The germ of this idea had begun as early as February 1963 with the idea in the works of such smaller vehicles sporting for sale in the American auto market North.

But it was the success of the product of the Ford Mustang, which finally put the pedal to the metal (or the design and marketing staff is good and budget departmental project funding). It is said that nothing drives a project of the automotive industry that the potential of excellent sales figures and profitability of. Even the name of the vehicle product "Cougar" is not entirely unique. Puma is in the same vein as "Mustang" – both elegant animals fast racing.

Although the Cougar was also built in to 111 inches

wheelbase similar to the Mustang sports car, the Cougar was rather three inches and half inches shorter than its cousin – the Thunderbird. Beneath the elegant sheet metal the Cougar was a Mustang, so to speak. At present it shares with the cougar his cousins – the sporty Mustang, and the dour family vehicle – the Ford Falcon (which was also known in the Canadian market as Frontenac Ford product. The Ford Mustang had the greatest fortune of being born of the product line Ford Falcon. Mustang enthusiasts owe a great debt of gratitude to so-called "pact of the family" car. The Ford Falcon allowed both the Mustang car project as well as the Cougar car product to develop a rapid, inexpensive to produce, and a platform proven and durable base. Even the script of the early Mustangs was a direct copy of the Falcons.

Beneath all the glitz of its elegant sheet metal of the car was Cougar, Mustang using exactly the same Falcon front suspension and a rigid rear axle with four leaf springs. A base of 289 cubic inch V-8 200 hp (gross), but the action occurred in the real appearance of a 390 cubic inch V-8 that made 320 hp. A GT option included a performance handling package and power disc brakes that replaced more standard front brake drums. Finally special GT wheels complete the package.

It has been said that the chief designer of the planned Lincoln Mercury Cougar like a European sports car elegance, along the lines of the Jaguar Mark 2. How is it that the Cougar went racing?

In 1967 Bud Moore Lincoln Mercury again the key man for a bullet in the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. Cougar team of drivers, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Formula 1 driver Peter Revson and the pilot NASCAR Dave Pearson came in second in Ford Mustang's team. In 1968, then under the aegis of Moore, driver DeWayne "Tiny" Lund went to capture the NASCAR Grand Touring Championship.

So where and how the Cougar go wrong and eventually become a place not defined Wishy washy bloated luxo sort sports car by the end of life production cars? What turned out to be this product and ruin projects is the lack of understanding of the true Mercury direct as well as staff and executives from Ford as to what this car clear and distinct market was. One can say that at best is disinterested and at worst or idea and greedy. This lack of market focus, and not to know and appreciate the needs and desires of the potential customer market proved Cougar puma ruin.

In 1969 the Cougar product introduction was a bit more and a little more. Thereafter it was only a short decent Landau roofs and opera style and type options window of the day. Once this downward trend and spiral of the Cougar was inevitable. The happy years of early Cougar – specifically the first Cougar model years 1967 to 70 remain a time when the lion's roar sounded dual exhausts and the sign of a car that had some bite to it.
