Mercury Full Line

Many have thought about the Mercury Cougar simply nothing more than a luxo-bloated version of a Ford Thunderbird. It may well be the surprise of many of Ford, Mercury and Ford Mustang and Mercury Cougar enthusiasts 35 years ago that the stock Cougar "Pony" car was kicking in Trans-Am circuit.

Originally, the cougar was an idea that Lincoln-Mercury had been tossing around for some time, with the idea of a smaller sports car. Already in February 1963 this idea of a minor, and a Lincoln Mercury sport utility vehicle, introduced at the North American market, came to emerge within the corporate headquarters, marketing staff and design.

The success of the Ford Mustang was all that was needed to put the wheels in motion. In fact, the marketing of famous reference in terms to the popularity of the product market and sales of the Ford Mustang Pony "car was a sign that a donut shop or sell donuts as fast as Mustangs." Nothing leads the automobile industry than the potential and promise of the sales figures of fast cars. It should be noted that even the name of the product vehicle "Cougar" can be said that the family line generated. After the Cougar name is only six letters, but another member of a line of fast creatures. Both the names of the Mustang and Cougar evoke an image of softness and fast speed and agility.

Built on a 111 cm wheelbase, the cougar is three inches and half inches shorter than its cousin – the Thunderbird. Beneath the veneer of elegant Cougar was a Mustang, so to speak. Currently shared with the cougar his cousins – the sporty Mustang, and the family vehicle more severe – the Ford Falcon (which was also known in the Canadian market as Frontenac Ford product. The Ford Mustang had the greatest fortune of being born of the product line Ford Falcon. Mustang enthusiasts owe a great debt of gratitude to so-called "family pact" hire. The Ford Falcon allowed both the Mustang car project as well as the product of a fast car Cougar to develop, cheaper to produce, and a platform proven and durable base. Even the script of the early Mustangs was a direct copy of the Falcons.

Beneath all the glitz of its Smart car plate Cougar Mustang was using the exact same Falcon front suspension and a rigid rear axle with four leaf springs. A base of 289 cubic inch V-8 200 hp (gross) but the real action came in the guise of a 390 cubic inch V-8 that made 320 hp. A GT option included a performance handling package and power disc brakes that replaced more standard front brake drums. Finally special GT wheels complete the package.

It has been said that the chief designer for Lincoln Mercury had provided the cougar as a European sports car elegance, along the lines of the Jaguar Mark 2. How is it that the Cougar went racing?

In 1967 Lincoln Bud Moore Mercury was again the key man for a bullet in the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. Cougar team of drivers, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Formula 1 driver Peter Revson and NASCAR driver Dave Pearson came in second in Ford Mustang's team. In 1968, then under the aegis of Moore, driver DeWayne "Tiny" Lund came to capturing the NASCAR Grand Touring Championship.

So where and how the Cougar go wrong. It seems that Lincoln-Mercury was never quite sure how market the Cougar. This lack of market focus, and not to know and appreciate the needs and desires of the potential customer market proved to be the Cougar Cougar ruin. In the 1969 product introduction the Cougar was a little more and a little more. Thereafter it was only a short decent Landau roofs and opera style and options for window type of day. Once started this downward trend and spiral of the Cougar was inevitable. The happy years of early Cougar – specifically the early years 1967-70 Cougar model remains a time when the Cougar Roar resonated dual exhaust and the sign of a car that had some bite to it.
